Windows 11 update is blocking BIOS updates on Lenovo ThinkPads

Microsoft introduced Windows 11 as its latest operating system, but even this new version could not escape some technical issues. A recent issue is affecting some devices from a leading laptop manufacturer. It seems that an update released for Windows 11 is preventing BIOS updates from successfully installing on Lenovo ThinkPad laptops.

The cause behind this issue is a change in Windows files. The recent security updates, along with the 22H2, 23H2, and 24H2 versions of Windows 11, were also applied to the 22H2 version of Windows 10. These updates made modifications to the system's driver blacklist, which resulted in the banning of some drivers with security flaws.

However, it seems that a tweak made to the WinFlash64.exe file during this process led to this issue. As a result, ThinkPad users are facing error messages when trying to update via the BIOS Update utility or the Vantage app.

However, this issue has been resolved. Lenovo has released BIOS version v.161 (v1.61), which will be available to ThinkPad users soon. Additionally, the Lenovo support team is suggesting updating the BIOS via Windows Update. It is not yet clear whether Microsoft will release a separate update to address this issue.

Meanwhile, Microsoft is continuing the process of phasing out Windows 10. The company is encouraging users to upgrade to Windows 11. According to an announcement last year, support for Windows 10 will end on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 users can upgrade their systems to Windows 11 for free, but many are still stuck with the older version. Currently, more than 50% of Windows users are still using Windows 10.

Microsoft is warning that continuing with the old system poses security risks. Users are being sent emails to this effect and, in some cases, are being advised to buy a new computer with Windows 11. However, those who don’t want to give up Windows 10 have an option—they can get another year of security updates for a one-time payment of $30.

Upgrading to Windows 11 has become much easier. It’s free and can be started with just a few clicks. However, keep in mind that the upgrade process can take some time, so keep in mind that your computer will not be usable during that time.
